Founded in 1894, Pomfret is a small independent boarding and day school serving grades 9–12 plus postgrads. Set on a stunning 500-acre hilltop in Northeastern Connecticut, our students hail from 28 states and 29 countries. Our mission is to empower students to pursue lives of meaning and purpose, and our vision is to inspire the next generation of change makers and problem solvers.
Brought to life by an exceptional faculty, we are both bold and practical in our approach — intensely focused on the interests and needs of our students, and pragmatic in our efforts to prepare them for the joys and rigors of college, work, and life. In doing so, we are deeply committed to fostering an atmosphere of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all of our students, faculty, and staff.
Unique Characteristics
Though our school is more than a century old, we embrace a vision for curricular change that rivals the newest and most innovative schools in the country. The Grauer Family Institute for Excellence and Innovation in Education makes significant resources available for faculty to experiment with emerging teaching methods and pursue ongoing professional development so that they may design and deliver innovative programs in and out of the classroom. Newly admitted students cited the School’s commitment to innovative teaching and learning; the availability of signature programs, such as Global Studies, Certificates, Project: Pomfret, and QUEST; and our dedicated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as the top three reasons for selecting Pomfret. Followed closely as the fourth reason they chose Pomfret was the attractiveness of our magnificent 500-acre campus.
DIFFERENT BY DESIGN: PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO GET YOU THINKING.
Project: Pomfret allows us to explore and investigate the problems that inspire and perplex us. The result is an experience steeped in discovery, measured by progress, and powered by possibility.
QUEST: Born from a handful of simple but important questions, QUEST is the cornerstone initiative of our student life curriculum.
CERTIFICATES: Much like a college major, our Certificate Program offers deep exposure to a specific area of study during your time at Pomfret.
GLOBAL STUDIES: Our Travel Program gives students the opportunity to study anywhere in the world for credit.
HELIOS: The Helios Project is a passive solar aquaponics greenhouse built by students. The greenhouse supports student research and supplies fresh produce to local food pantries.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: At Pomfret, we believe community service is more than an idea. It’s a call to action. This program pairs students with community partners to do real work that changes lives for the better.
