Description

Surrounded by New Hampshire’s lakes and White Mountains, Holderness School is a boarding school community of joyful learners, adventurers and artists, advocates and athletes. Founded in 1879, Holderness School is committed to the mission of fostering equally in each student the resources of the mind, body, and spirit in the creation of a caring community, inspiring all to work for the betterment of humankind and God’s creation. Our students develop deep and lasting friendships while actively learning what it means to be a member of a community, where they are respected, known, and challenged. Holderness is more than a school, it’s an elevated experience.

Unique Characteristics

Connection to the Outdoors – At the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region and White Mountains, Holderness School has a long history of adventure education and outdoor programming.  From Orientation Hike and Mountain Day to winter camping opportunities and adventure sports like rock climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking, Holdernes students develop deep connections to the outdoors and gain confidence in themselves as they overcome new challenges.

Experiential Education – Holderness School’s leadership program is defined by the characteristics of Fairness, Initiative, Dependability, and Empathy.  In this long-standing tradition of student leadership, all students contribute to the operation of the school through the student jobs program.  The Special Programs period sees students creating art, serving the local community, camping in the White Mountains, and participating in a self-designed internship.
